Titanic 100 years on
A cruise ship has retraced the Titanic's route across the North
Atlantic exactly 100 years after the liner sank there. The passengers
and crew held a remembrance ceremony at the spot where 1500 people lost
their lives.
It's been a blustery voyage at times for the MS Balmoral crossing the Atlantic carrying 1300 passengers.
Some of them relatives of people who travelled the same route on Titanic a century ago; others, just fascinated by the history and mystery of what happened to her.
Now they are all coming together at the very spot where Titanic sank to be led in prayer on the decks overlooking the stern of the cruise ship.
Wreaths of flowers will be thrown into the ocean directly above the wreck site and then this ship's band will play 'Nearer My God To Thee', the hymn said to have been played by Titanic's band as she sank into the cold, dark, icy water exactly 100 years ago.

After Election, Putin Faces Challenges to Legitimacy

Thousands rallied in Moscow's
Pushkin Square on Monday to protest the election of Vladimir V. Putin
as president a day earlier. The police there said they had taken 250
people into custody.
While Mr. Putin was still celebrating his win, he received a slap in
the face from observers from the Organization for Security and
Cooperation in Europe. While finding less of the ballot stuffing and
other flagrant violations that they said had marred parliamentary elections
in December, the observers said Mr. Putin had faced no real competition
and unfairly benefited from lavish government spending on his behalf.
Mr. Putin received milder responses from the European Union and from
the United States, which called for an “independent, credible”
investigation of fraud allegations but said it was ready to work with
him in his new role.
Thousands of antigovernment protesters later gathered in a Moscow
square to chant, “Russia without Putin.” Yet the crowd, which the
police estimated at 15,000, lacked the giddy optimism that had pervaded earlier rallies.
When the riot police demanded that the crowd disperse after a couple of
hours, many refused to leave. The police then swept up the blogger
Aleksei Navalny, the most charismatic figure to emerge in this wave of
activism, and dozens of other activists and pushed them into police
vans. The police said 250 people had been detained, though many were
released early Tuesday morning.
An additional 300 people were detained after a similar event in St. Petersburg.
The arrests drew criticism from the American ambassador, Michael A. McFaul, who said via Twitter
that it was “troubling to watch arrests of peaceful demonstrators at
Pushkin Square.” Mikhail D. Prokhorov, the billionaire oligarch who
placed third in Sunday’s election, wrote over Facebook that he was
“indignant over the use of force against people who came to express
their civic position.”
In Washington, the reaction to the election was strikingly muted, even
restrained. The White House did not comment, and the State Department
put out a written statement
congratulating the Russian people and saying the United States “looks
forward to working with the president-elect after the results are
certified and he is sworn in.”
While it noted concerns about “the conditions under which the campaign
was conducted, the partisan use of government resources and procedural
irregularities on election day,” the statement also praised pledges by
the authorities to increase transparency in elections and restore
elections for regional governors.
The events followed a commanding victory for Mr. Putin, who finished
with 64 percent of the vote to win a term that would extend his rule as
Russia’s preeminent leader to 18 years. Leaders of the opposition have
vowed to challenge Mr. Putin’s claim to the position, largely by
uncovering and disseminating evidence of fraud.
“This was a procedure and not really an election,” Mr. Navalny said
late Sunday as he watched the election returns come in at a cafe
crowded with supporters. “It’s historic in that up until today, Putin
had some claim on legitimacy as a political leader, but now that he has
run this fake election marked by mass fraud to become emperor, he has
none.”
Mr. Navalny said, when someone asked, that he was not concerned about being arrested.
“I am just one cog in a very big machine,” he said. “If we have to, we
will stay in the streets forever until they accept our demands.”
Mr. Putin was genuinely shaken in December when his United Russia Party
performed dismally in parliamentary elections. Those results, widely
dismissed as fraudulent, touched off impassioned protests that drew
tens of thousands of young Muscovites, who chanted, “Russia without
Putin” and “Putin is a thief.”
Mr. Putin managed to consolidate his support in recent weeks, though,
and in many regions received nearly double the percentage of votes that
United Russia had in December. This election — like every presidential
race since 1996 — was a foregone conclusion, since Mr. Putin’s rivals
were docile, familiar candidates who had already lost to him and his
allies repeatedly.
He also undertook a full-throated populist campaign, increasing
pensions and military salaries and promising an avalanche of new
government spending. He even ventured into Western-style campaigning,
appearing before crowds to exhort them to stand with him.
After the returns came in on Sunday, Mr. Putin was clearly emotionally
overwhelmed, and a tear trailed down the side of his face as he
addressed supporters. His spokesman, Dmitri S. Peskov, later said it
had been caused by the wind.
FRENCH KISS
PLOT:
Kate (Meg Ryan)
is a fastidious, intelligent, and innocent young woman who thinks she
knows exactly what her future will be, planning it according to logic.
She plans to marry a Toronto doctor named Charlie (Timothy Hutton) and live "happily ever after" with him as soon as he comes back from a business trip to Paris. The trip was something that Charlie asked Kate to accompany him on, but she declined due to her fear of flying. Her plans get ruined when her fiancé becomes smitten with a beautiful, young French woman named Juliette (Susan Anbeh) and, while drunk at a club, calls Kate and informs her that he's in love and not returning.
Determined to get him back, Kate overcomes her fear of flying and
boards a flight for Paris. Onboard, she is seated next to a Frenchman
named Luc Teyssier (Kline), a crude petty thief
whom she is forced to tolerate for seven hours of the flight. They have
choppy, sarcastic conversation on the flight from Canada to Paris. Luc
hides a stolen diamond necklace and a small grapevine in her purse to
get them past customs, causing him to track Kate and follow her.
Many mishaps occur between Kate and Luc. When she waits at the hotel
Charlie is staying at, a petty thief makes flirtatious advances and,
when Kate faints after watching Charlie and Juliette together, he
steals her bag. Luc comes and wakes up Kate, and hunts down her bag for
the necklace to no avail. Kate and Luc argue, and they go their
separate ways but find each other again. Under the pretense for helping
Kate win back Charlie, he stays close to her to be near the necklace,
the whereabouts of which are not revealed. Meanwhile, until they return
to where Charlie is, they stay at Luc's family's house, a vineyard. It
turns out that Luc and his brother are bitter toward each other because
Luc's brother got him drunk, tricked him, and took Luc's birthright to
an area of the vineyard in one hand of poker.
The two follow Charlie and Juliette to Cannes
in southern France, with Luc pretending to be Kate's lover to make
Charlie jealous. While attending a dance, Charlie apologizes to Kate
and attempts to seduce her; her facial expression hints that she is
confused and indecisive as to whether or not she loves Charlie but goes
up to the hotel room with him. Meanwhile, Juliette flirts with Luc, and
the two also go into a hotel room together. Kate stops Charlie,
demanding to know up-front whether he loves her. When he hesitates and
gives a vague inclination, she realizes that she never loved Charlie.
Luc, on the other hand, calls Juliette "Kate", causes her to become
annoyed and leave. In the morning, the two are seemingly awkward with
each other, asking each other how their night was.
Kate discovers that Luc has stolen the necklace and the police are
after him. Not letting him find out that she knows the truth about the
necklace, she offers to sell it for him at the Jewelers. She hands over
the necklace to the inspector and withdraws her own money and gives it
to Luc. Kate and Luc say goodbye to each other; Kate tells him she is
leaving for the airport. The inspector indicates to Luc what Kate has
done for him.
After realizing his true feelings, Luc runs to Kate and confesses
that he's in love with her. The film ends with a shot of Luc and Kate
standing in a growing vineyard, their arms wrapped around each other.

Sleepy hollow
In 1799, New York City police constable Ichabod Crane is dispatched by his superiors to the Westchester County hamlet of Sleepy Hollow, New York, to investigate a series of brutal slayings in which the victims have been found decapitated. A frequent user of new, though so far unproven investigative techniques such as finger-printing and autopsies, Crane arrives in Sleepy Hollow armed with his bag of scientific tools only to be informed by the town's elders that the murderer is not of flesh and blood, rather a headless supernatural warrior from beyond the grave who rides at night on a massive black steed.
Crane begins his own investigation, still remaining highly skeptical about the supernatural elements in the case until he encounters the Headless Horseman himself. Boarding a room at the home of the town's richest family, the Van Tassels, Crane develops an attraction to their daughter, the mysterious Katrina, even as he's plagued by nightmares of his mother's horrific torture when he was a child. Delving further into the mystery with the aid of the orphaned Young Masbeth, whose father was a victim of the Horseman, Crane discovers within the Western Woods the Horseman's grave, as well as his entry point into the natural world from the supernatural — the gnarled Tree of the Dead.
Crane finds the Horseman's skull is missing, though the murders continue until Crane uncovers a murky plot revolving around revenge and land rights with the Horseman controlled by Katrina's stepmother, Lady Van Tassel, who sends the killer after Katrina now to solidify her hold on what she considers her property, a piece of land unjustily claimed by Katrina's father. Following a fight in the local windmill and a stagecoach chase through the woods, Crane eventually thwarts Lady Van Tassel by returning the skull to the Horseman, who regains his head and heads back to Hell along with his enslaver. With his job in Sleepy Hollow over, Crane, with Katrina and Young Masbeth, returns to New York (where he describes as where "the Bronx is up and the Battery is down..." - Tim Burton's nod to the song New York, New York (On the Town) by Leonard Bernstein), in time for the new century.

Halloween (also spelled Hallowe'en) is an annual holiday celebrated on October 31. It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holy day of All Saints.Originally Halloween was a pagan festival, around the idea of linking the living with the dead, when contact became possible between the spirits and the physical world, and magical things were more likely to happen. Like most pagan festivals, long ago it was absorbed into the festivals of the expanding Christian church, and became associated with All Hallows Day, or All Saints Day, which eventually fell on November 1.
The celebration of Halloween survived most strongly in Ireland. It was an end of summer festival, and was often celebrated in each community with a bonfire to ward off the evil spirits. Children would go from door to door in disguise as creatures from the underworld to collect treats, mainly fruit, nuts and the like for the festivities. These were used for playing traditional games like eating an apple on a string or bobbing for apples and other gifts in a basin of water, without using your hands. Salt might be sprinkled on the visiting children to ward off evil spirits. Carving turnips as ghoulish faces to hold candles became a popular part of the festival, which has been adapted to carving pumpkins in America.
The day is often associated with the colours black and orange, and is strongly associated with symbols like the jack-o'-lantern. Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, wearing costumes and attending costume parties, ghost tours, bonfires, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, and watching horror films.

Well, when I saw in the news that Steve Jobs had dead I put very sad because it was an icon for me. I love the Apple gadgets and Pixar. Lluís: Did I ever tell you about my wedding?

Lluís: Oh, it was forty years ago now. I've got some photos.
